Skratch Labs Sport Hydration Drink Mix Review

Deliberately carries real sugar as fuel — this is a carbohydrate drink with electrolytes, not an electrolyte drink.

The verdict

Buy it if

Rides, runs and events past the 90-minute mark where you need fluid, sodium and fuel from one bottle.

Skip it if

You want hydration without calories, or you are drinking it at a desk.

What's good

  • Provides 80 calories of usable carbohydrate for sessions over about 90 minutes
  • Flavoured with real freeze-dried fruit, no artificial sweeteners
  • Noticeably light flavour — easier to drink in volume than sweet sports drinks
  • Well established with endurance cyclists and runners

What's not

  • Only 40 mg potassium — the lowest here by a wide margin
  • 19 g of sugar makes it unsuitable as an everyday drink
  • You are partly paying for calories you could get more cheaply
  • Unsweetened version has a different mineral profile — do not mix them up

This is a fuel product with electrolytes, not the reverse

The single most useful thing to understand about Skratch is that its 19 g of sugar is the feature, not a compromise. At 80 calories per serving it is supplying usable carbohydrate for efforts long enough to need it, with sodium and fluid alongside in the same bottle.

For sessions past roughly ninety minutes, carbohydrate intake starts to matter for performance, and taking it as a drink rather than as gels or bars means one thing to carry instead of three. That is a real convenience on a long ride.

For anything shorter — and certainly for drinking at a desk — those 80 calories are just calories. Muscle glycogen comfortably covers an hour of exercise without topping up.

Real fruit, and a deliberately light flavour

Skratch is flavoured with freeze-dried fruit rather than artificial flavouring, and it is noticeably less sweet than a typical sports drink. That sounds like a marketing point but has a practical consequence: when you need to drink several bottles over a long day, an intensely sweet drink becomes hard to face. A light one does not.

This is a large part of why the brand has held its position with endurance cyclists and runners despite being neither the cheapest nor the most mineral-dense option.

The potassium figure is very low

At 40 mg, Skratch carries the least potassium of anything in this roundup by a wide margin — Redmond Re-Lyte provides ten times as much. If you want a balanced mineral replacement rather than a fuel source, this is not it.

Note also that Skratch sells an unsweetened version with a different mineral profile. The two are easy to confuse and the panels do not match, so check which one you are ordering.

Skratch Labs Sport Hydration Drink Mix questions

Why does Skratch have so much sugar?

Because it is designed as a fuel source for long efforts, not just an electrolyte mix. The 19 g of sugar provides carbohydrate for sessions past about ninety minutes, where energy intake affects performance.

Is Skratch good for everyday hydration?

No. At 80 calories and 19 g of sugar per serving it is built for exercise. For daily use, a zero-calorie mix like Ultima Replenisher makes far more sense.

What is the difference between Skratch Sport and the unsweetened version?

Different formulations with different mineral profiles. The figures on this page are for the standard Sport Hydration Drink Mix. Check the panel on the version you buy.
