Electrolyte drinks vs sports drinks

These get shelved together and used interchangeably, but they are built to solve different problems. The distinction is carbohydrate, and it decides which one is right for you.

Three categories, not two

It is cleaner to think in three groups, because the third is the one people most often reach for at the wrong moment.

1. Electrolyte mixes

Minerals with little or no carbohydrate. The job is replacing what you lose in sweat, or topping up sodium on a low-carb diet. Glucose and sodium are absorbed together in the small intestine through a shared transporter, and moving them together pulls water across with them. The short version

Replacing minerals → electrolyte mix. Fuelling something long → sports drink. Recovering from illness or serious fluid loss → oral rehydration solution. Trouble starts when a product from one category gets used for another category's job.

How to decide, by duration

Where the marketing blurs it

Almost every product in this category is sold with the same visual language — athletes, heat, exertion — regardless of which of the three groups it actually belongs to. A zero-sodium daily mix and a 1,000 mg sweat-replacement stick can look near-identical on a shelf.

Common questions

Is Gatorade an electrolyte drink?

It is a sports drink — a carbohydrate solution with sodium added. It contains electrolytes, but its primary design purpose is delivering carbohydrate during exercise. Gatorade also makes Gatorlyte, which is positioned differently, with a wider mineral spread and less sugar.

Can I just use an oral rehydration solution for exercise?

You can, and for rehydrating after heavy losses it works well — that is the formulation with the strongest evidence behind it. What it is not designed to do is fuel a long effort, because the carbohydrate concentration is deliberately kept low to optimise fluid absorption rather than energy delivery.

Do I need carbohydrate in my drink for a one-hour workout?

Generally no. Muscle glycogen comfortably covers efforts around an hour, so for most sessions of that length a drink with sugar in it is providing calories you did not need. Carbohydrate during exercise starts to matter as sessions extend well past that.
